Direct international flights from Suva

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi,

Suva(Nausori) is called international airport.
As I checked on airline websites, I found no direct flights except Tuvalu(Air Fiji).
Are there any direct flights to New Zealand or Australia?

greetings,
grzesiek

Direct internautional flights to Australia and NZ are from Nadi not Suva.

Actually, I think there are direct flights from Suva to Sydney (well at least I hope so as I'm booked on one in February!). They're operated by Air Pacific (www.airpacific.com.fj) who codeshare with Qantas. Though now that I look, despite the flight time looking correct on my frequent flyer itinerary (FJ941 29 Feb 0700 Suva - 1055 Sydney) , I can't find the flight on the Air Pacific website.
The Nausori airport site (http://www.fijiairlines.com/nausori-airport.cfm) seems to imply there are twice weekly flights to Sydney and Auckland.
Probably easiest to check with a travel agent about the services available from Suva.

There used to be flights from Suva to either Tonga or Samoa. If there is ANY international flight, it becomes an "international" airport.
I think the codeshare with Qantas would go via Nadi, Qantas does not serve Suva (it may include a Suva---Nadi domestic flight, not sure).

Air Pacific's flights from Nadi to Tonga (but not Samoa) stop at Suva - or they did when I was there.
And I also do recall seeing flights from Suva to Auckland, though they may in practice originate in, or go via Nadi.

Yes, a few yrs ago I think there was a flight from Suva to Vava'u in (northern) Tonga. But as with a lot of SP routes, they are drying up fairly quickly.

5

Actually. the Nadi-Suva-Tonga flight I mentioned is (was?) to Nuku Alofa, still operating well after the Vavau flights died.

Air Pacific did operate international flights from Suva to Sydney, Airport was built out as international airport and did get a facelift. But for whatever reasons travel agents in Australia were often not aware that this option existed and kept selling Sydney - Nadi, instead of Sydney - Nausori (Suva). Only "insiders" did know and used this option. And then the coup 2006 happened and with it the tourism numbers decreased, so Sydney - Nausori is now stopped until things get better.
And I believe there was also one flight per week from Nausori to Auckland.
gsm - you better confirm wih your travel agent - but we all hope that the flights will be back on by February. On the other hand the domestic part of Air Pacific which is Pacific Sun (formerly Sun Air) is connecting with most of the international flights in Nadi and continues to Suva.
