Diving and working in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi everybody!

We're in desperate need of some good advice!!

Me and a buddy of mine are planning to come to Fiji in April '08 to work as divemasters on one of the islands but we have heard so many contradictory oppinions on the diving situation down there we dont know what to expect?! We are hoping to be able to work on the islands for about 6 months...

-What are the opportunities for us getting a job as divemasters in Fiji?? What should we do?

-Is it monopolized by "awesome adventures Fiji" so that it is impossible getting a job without teaming up with those guys? Or is there many private owned diveshops around we could contact for job-inquiries?

-Hows the payment and accommodation prices generaly?

-And where is the best diving on the islands?

Have any of you guys been working in Fiji or just been diving there and got an impression of the situation you'll be making our day if you would drop us an advice... ANY ADVICE would be a big help!!

MANY THANX in advance for your help! It means a lot!

Hi! My wife has just done a Padi course in Fiji.
Awesome Adventures are not the only operators in Fiji.
She dived with Viti Water Sports on Matamanoa Island and Sub Surface at Funky Fish Resort.
In the Mamamuca Islands we also stayed at Navini Island Resort and Vomo Island resort, neither of these had their own dive shops but were affiliated with Sub Surface who would have to come and collect you if you wanted to dive.
The diving is good in most of Fiji, there are over 300 islands so there is a vast range of places to choose from.

A previous post was about the same topic. The replies seem to indicate that these jobs were very hard to come by, and mostly monopolized by Australians. But, good luck anyway!

The instructors my wife had were French, English and local.
The Sub Surface one's seemed overworked, Viti Water Sports gave one on one tuition and were very good, unfortunately that instructor has now moved on to Australia and his place was taken by another Englishman.
