Early morning arrival into Nadi

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

We (59 and 60 yos) are arriving in Nadi after about 18 hours in the air from New Orleans via LA.
The flight arrives at 5.10am and although we are booked into the Radisson, check in is not until 3pm. Any suggestions for 2 weary travellers to keep us awake and entertained until that time. To check in early means booking another night which we are not keen to do. We could either take our luggage to the hotel or store it at the airport so that is not a problem.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Nadi itself ain't the most glamourous of places to while away a few hours, and I'd take your luggage up to the Radisson.

They'll have lounges/bars there that no doubt you should be able to use for some relief from the heat of the day, and you should probably even be able to use their pool so take your swimmers etc. in a daypack.

Even though you're going to feel a bit weary, it's better I've found to stay awake until some later hour in evening, so don't go crashing at 3 pm or you wake about 2 or 3 in morning.

There's a market up in the town, a Hindu temple you'll be welcome enough at and a couple of small department type stores flogging all manner of touristy stuff.
So other than using pool etc. at the Radisson, having breke there? or chancing what you can find up the street (a $10 taxi ride away if I'm thinking of right place), you'll probably while a few hours away in the town - get yourself a sarong with velcro stickies as well as straps made up.
There's a good seamstress shop just out from the northern end of market from memory - a bunch of shops on corner with main street but set back a bit, like a forecourt or parking area on corner.

There's some islands not too far out and from memory a day trip was about $60, and that would use up the day for you - there's like a little trips kiosk sitting on the footpath on main street before the market, and they'll have all the info.

So one way or another just keep awake!

Good ideas, above. But---you may find that you will be able to check in a little earlier than 3pm if your assigned room is ready to go. They put the 3pm check-in time to give the maids time to clean up after the previous guests have left, usually by 10am or 12 noon. But Fiji is not very crowded now, so if the room they have assigned for you was not slept in the night before, they may let you check in maybe around noon or so without an extra charge.

So, once you get there, ask if the room may be available a little earlier than 3pm, at no extra charge. If so, ask at what hour it will be free. THEN---ask how much it would cost for an "Early Check-in" right then and there (probably you'll get there around 7am or so). It may not be too much, if the room is available. It is usually 50% from 6am onwards.

After 18 hours of flights you will be awake mostly on adrenaline and coffee, so the sooner you can get some sleep the sooner you can enjoy your vacation. It may be worth 50% for immediate sleep, or try for it for free at noon perhaps.

Have fun!

Thanks Raro and Lark. I am hoping that we can get our room earlier but am just planning for all contigencies. Early check in is the full nights room cost so that is not an option.

I got into Papeete at 6 a.m and could not check in till 1 p.m. I just locked my luggage in the luggage room
at the hotel, washed up in the main restrooms and walked around orienting myself, getting breakfast etc..
I managed to stay up till after dinner.
