Extending a layover in Nadi - ideas?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

My husband and I are planning to go to New Zealand for our honeymoon. We have to fly through Nadi, so I thought spending a week or so there might be fun. We're going in January, which I recently read was the rainy season in Fiji. I am wondering if it is worth it to make a stop over there and if so, what we should do/where we should stay. From what I've read, it sounds like going to one of the smaller islands is the best idea. I am pretty frugal (even when its our honeymoon) and I am a little worried about the cost to get to another island and accommodations while we are there. Is it worth the money? Can anyone make any recommendations as to if its worth it, which island, and where to stay? I know my husband would love to do an overnight (or possibly multiple night) sailing trip. I don't know if there is anything like that available, but thought I should ask while I am getting advice! Any information you have will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Hilary

Check Google for more info, here's a sample of some day trips from Nadi:

There's always the risk of the weather not cooperating, but many people go during the rainy season and have a great trip. I went at the end of the rainy season and there were a couple of not-so-great weather days, but it was still one of the highlights of my 9 months of travelling.

There are a number of excellent places to stay in the Yasawas and it is absolutely worth it. Blue Lagoon, Paradise Cove, Navutu Stars, Nanuya, and Octopus all get consistently excellent reviews. Tripadvisor is a very good source for figuring out where to stay in the Yasawas. If spending a week, I'd split it between 2-3 places.

There are a number of multi-day cruises/sailing trips available if you google it. I don't know how they compare to actually staying on the islands and getting around with the Yasawa Flyer.

My wife and I did a one-week stopover en route to NZ a couple of years ago. We went out to Octopus Resort in the Yasawas for a week. We both loved it.

if you have the money I would do a short cruise, that way you see a lot of islands and snorkel in a different place twice a day, both cruise companies are good

Thanks to everyone for all the help/ideas!

We just got back from spending a week at The Pearl of the South Pacific Hotel in Pacific Harbour on Viti Levu, that mainland. It was not expensive and a nice place to stay. It's right on the beach and about an hours bus ride from the capital city of Suva.

We took the Pacific transport bus from the airport. It costs only $FJD12 for a 3 hour ride, which was scenic and interesting.

I would stay there again.
