Extreme Budget - Itinerary ideas?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi all,

I am accompaning my partner to Fiji this February, and we will be arriving into Nadi and staying at Hostel nearby. In actuality my partner is on a visa re-validation run from Australia (leaving the country and then re-entering to start the 3 months again on a multiple entry tourist visa ). We will be staying for 10 days and currently have put a deposit for all 10 days at the hostel....

Being on an extremley tight budget, what are some cheap and easy things to do from our location. Specifically is it possible to day trip to the other islands? How much and by what mode of transport?

I do realise that most tourists dont hang around Nadi too long, but for us cash is tight (Only got back from a 8 month backpacking trip last November)

Help would be greatly appreciated.

You could circum navigate Viti Levu by local bus in 2 days (3 is better) and use some cheap accommodation along the way.

Cheers,
Peter

Thats a great Idea. Thanks

What is "an extremely tight budget" as a dollar figure?
As Peter says, staying on Viti Levu is cheap and easy to do. However, it's also not as scenic/nice as the other islands, and some of those other islands aren't all that much more expensive than the mainland.

In any case, definitely don't stay in one hostel in Nadi for 10 days. The public buses are good all things being considered, but you don't want to have to go back to Nadi every night. Break it up a bit by staying in a few different places.

thanks tch.

Currently our accom is $6AU per night in a dorm... So similar price for accom would be great (I have put a deposit down on the booking but have cancellation protection for deposit refund).... Perhaps a budget of $20-$25 (inc accom) per day

What is the cheapest way to get to one of the other prettier islands? We can def take the bus to Suva for a night or two, and hopefully do some inland trekking?

Thanks all

I'm not at all confident you could get by on that budget. Local buses are cheap (Nadi to Lautoka round $2, Nadi to Suva a few years back $12), but boat transport would be way out of your reach.

Hmmm, with that budget I'm not that there's much you could do beyond sit in Nadi for 10 days doing nothing. It definitely puts anywhere else I was thinking of out of reach.

You must be booked into the Nadi Downtown Motel/Backpackers, I bet.
That is by far the cheapest accommodation in Fiji, you won't find such prices for accommodation anywhere else in the country.
You should be prepared to pay ca. twice as much even for budget accommodation elsewhere. If you can't, you will be stuck in Nadi, which I think is hardly worth visiting Fiji for.
