Fiji - air con or ceiling fan?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

In our sixties, week at Octopus or Blue Lagoon in early November . Better to pay extra $100 per night for air con or are ceiling fans adequate? Thanks!

The ceiling fans work fine with the ocean breezes. If you feel a bit warm, a dip in the ocean or the
Octopus' pool gets the job done- Have a great holiday!

I'm 60s too - and a regular at both resorts. The ceiling fans are fine - especially if you keep the louvre windows open to breezes (they have insect screens on them). Personally I find it harder to deal with the change in temperature between aircon and the outside - best to get acclimatised and not have that sudden chill.

$100 is a lot of wine.

Love these replies ! Now, TaiMarilyn, as a regular at both, which one do you like best? (I am a snorkeling Granny )

Hello there, Just thought I'd throw another opinion into the mix.
I personally would pay for the A/C( if cost is not an issue).
Why? If you are not accustomed to hot/ humid tropical weather (at that time of year it is at it's peak in Fiji) it can be very draining, In fact it can make the difference between a refreshing, good night's sleep or a clammy/balmy one. It really depends on the climate you are coming from and are used to.
People who live here and have adjusted to the weather patterns may feel differently than someone who is arriving from a cold or dry weather area. Any health issues should also be taken into consideration. Hope your trip goes well and that you can be at peace with your decision,
All the best, Chiavenna

Cost is always an issue...

I like the luxury of AC as much as anyone... but at $100 a night? Octopus's garden bures are not much more than that amount in total

I would say Blue Lagoon - although I'm about to have my 18th visit to Octopus in as many years and love it to bits - Blue Lagoon has calm water due to the shelter of neighbouring islands, swimming and snorkelling at all tides. Octopus has a much steeper beach and sometimes rough water which make snorkelling uncomfortable for this snorkelling Grandma. Blue Lagoon is a delight at all times - they must have waves at some time but I have yet to experience them.

I'm still with the ceiling fan too - why bother going to a warm country if you can't stand warm?? Balmy nights are great - if you can't sleep try a moonlit walk on the beach :)

Air Cond vs ceiling fan vs wine....

Peter_n_Margaret ... "$100 is a lot of wine"

I agree...drink $15 worth of wine each night and you'll be satisfied with the ceiling fan. Drink $30 worth and you won't even care if the fan is on!

Drink $50 worth and you'll be satisfied sleeping on the beach! Who needs a bure....
