Hi,

im planning to stay around 7-8 days on fiji in august, within a round the world trip (another stop over option i have
is Cook islands ). How safe is it on fiji ? Since the military took over in 2006 i heard that there were an increasing number
of thieveries and violence etc. Does anybody have recent experience _

thanks a lot and best

Fiji is as safe as houses and you worry too much.

I think you should always exercise caution wherever you go, but I visited in April and did not feel particularly vulnerable. That said, Fiji is a relatively poor country, and I did have some $$ stolen from my bure in one instance. However, I think (hope) that was an isolated incident and generally found the people to be very very friendly and welcoming.

Fiji is as safe as anywhere in the world if not safer. I see your from Spain. Believe me, you probably would see more guns etc in the city of Spain than the whole of Fiji. The media distorts everything. Dont worry, come to Fiji you will have a great time with great people, even the military.

I agree with 123 - it is quite safe. At least tere is no danger from the army anyway.

When in Nadi last year, 2 backpackers who were staying where my son and I were, Nadi Bay Resort Hotel, were walking home at night. They (for some reason) one in front of the other. The one in front was robbed of her handbag by a Fijian chap. I think they are getting so desperate for money because in all the years I have been there, this has not happened to backpackers. There 'are' areas you need to avoid, if you head from Nadi airport to Nadi town, look at the shops that are all boarded up, this will indicate where there is crime. The islands are safe as far as I know, and of course the villages and generally everywhere else in daylight (except boarded up areas). I know some areas quite well (am off again next month) so feel free to ask me if you would like. I also advise googling the Fiji Times and reading daily news which will give you an idea of what happens there. BUT please do visit :)

People walking on dimly lit streets at night are targets of petty crime everywhere in the world....including in paradise.
The road from the airport to Nadi town, whilst a main road is dimly lit and not a good area to walk along at night

Life is definitely getting harder for folks who don't have a lot of money, add in easy opportunity or booze and your risk increases. Gnerally Fijians are just awesome but play it safe as you should everywhere and keep things locked away and out of sight even in your room.
