Fiji Drinking Water

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi,

What are the costs for bottled water? Better to buy lots at grocery store and lug it around or do resorts price it fairly? Or should I just bring my filter for places where tap isn't high quality?

THANKS!

Don't worry about the drinking water its the water they wash the vegatables that will get you. I got sick in fiji, 2 pills of anti-biotics and good to go

The only time I drank tap water I got a nasty stomach ache. I decided only to drink bottled water from then on... saved a ton of money by buying water at grocery stores and bringing it with me to the resort islands. At grocery store I could buy a 3-pack of 1.5 L bottles for $3. At the resorts it was about $4-$5/bottle!!! My advice, buy as much as you can carry and bring your own, but no matter what, don't drink the tap water.

Check with the resort first whether their tap water is safe to drink. Many places in Fiji now have treated tap water, or spring water which is completely safe and tastes much nicer than bottled water anyway.

If the tap water is deemed not to be drinkable, it's cheaper and more environmentally friendly (think of all those waste plastic bottles) to use a filter if you have one and can be bothered to use it. Otherwise the next best thing would be to buy large, eg. 6 l or 10 l bottles of water from a supermarket.
