Fiji for NY

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hey guys,

We are travelling to Fiji for New Years. Staying at Fiji beach resort by Hilton (called something like that).

Basically staying there only for 6 days. After a long time of work with no holidays a lot of time will be spent doing nothing (beach, pool, spa). But don't want to waste all of the Fijian time on doing nothing.

What would be the top things to do while you are there?
I love watersports etc.. Not so keen on the cultural aspect.

Also, planning on doing quite a bit of cooking ourselves - heard there are some awesome markets - advices?

"don't want to waste all of the Fijian time.................Not so keen on the cultural aspect. ............heard there are some awesome markets"

I'm confused..........

Cheers,
Peter

Cooking - this will depend on where you are staying as to whether you have the facilities to do so. Yes, the markets are great, particularly those in Suva and Lautoka, but there are small markets everywhere.

Peter, what's so confusing? I'm not a big fan of museums etc, although love visiting new ones when come to a new country, but wouldn't focus on that.

In terms of area - Hilton is on Denarau Island, understand its very big, but would expect its all very central...

Fiji is about beautiful south Pacific Islands and a unique culture.
You won't see any of that at the Hilton or Denarau which are synthetic tourist precincts. You might as well go to a hotel near home, IMO.
I suggest you catch a local bus and explore for a few days and also visit some Islands.

Cheers,
Peter

EDIT: Denarau is not really an "island" by the way, and does not have nice beaches either.

Agree with 4, no doubt you got a nice package tour price and a few days hotel pool side may suit but you should also think of going over to a Mamanuca island resort for a few days to get away to what i think is the real Fiji being the island life. Last time I went to the islands I stayed at one of the 5 star resorts in Denaru for 24 hours to compare. Yikes, coulda been at Surfers 'we reserved these chairs at 6am this morning, you can see we left our towels here reserving our spot so you need to move' Hmmm. Folks with noisey kids seemed to like it but compared to the islands I'll not stay there again. Enjoy though as Fiji is wonderful.
