Fiji help please!Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Hi Guys, I know this question has probably been done to death but I have a few specific questions and would love some help please! Me and 2 friends have 10 days booked in Fiji in December. We will be backpacking and need some advice. We have read about a pass that we can purchase which costs around £275 and means we can jump on and off of boats from Nadi and around the islands... I'm worried that we will be ripped off buying this here (in the UK) as most places I've travelled to its relatively easy to get between islands as and when you are there? We have also been told that we need to book our accommodation in advance... This is totally the opposite of what we usually do. We usually would book the first night when we land and then choose our next place to stay and the accommodation as and when using word of mouth or booking.com. Does this sound feasible or do we need to be more organised and plan more in advance. Finally, What are the absolute top tips and must sees? We land into Nadi and will do 1 or 2 nights the move on to the Mamanucas & Yasawas Islands. I have also seen Suva, Naval Village and Sawa-i-Lau Cave as must sees.. Am I missing anything? And finally with only 10 nights would we be better doing nights on the islands like 2/2/3 or hopping on and off and spending 1 or 2 nights on each? So sorry for the long post and any responses really will be appreciated. Thanks so much D xx
go to www.fiji-bookings.com and see what various ferry trips cost and see how it compares to what you were told. will give you an idea of base cost. note prices are apparently in US dollars. | 1
Will have a look thank you Rob!! | 2
You can get buses quite cheaply to travel about the main island, after you have visited some of the islands on the Nadi side, Save some time to do this. There is a great trip up the Navua River, with waterfalls lining each side of the river, and also one on the same river further up with lots of rapids if that appeals. Leleuvia island is on the east side and you can get across to Ovalau from there as you make you way around Viti Levu. there are more resorts around Raki Raki and an island off there which people like especially if you are a wind surfer. Taxis are also really cheap. | 3
Here's another site giving prices for Yasawa flyer | 4
I will have a look thank you very much! And what is your opinion on booking accommodation in advance? Is it a must or are you ok to turn up and book as you go along? | 5
Thank you! | 6 | |
Hi, I wouldn't just show up. I suggest you look at what each island offers to help you decide where to stay. Sawa-i-Lau Cave is beautiful so maybe stay at a resort closer to there. Also, have you searched on Thorntree for past posts on the different islands - it would be a good idea if you haven't. Please try to be culturally sensitive. The Fijians are generally shy and modest religious people (in clothing and in manners) who are very helpful and will dazzle you with their beautiful smiles. Staying at Nadi isn't exciting but will allow you time to see local life in Fiji. | 7
There is not much in Nadi so skip that if u can. The Yasawas were great. I did it last week. I went to the Marina on Monday and booked to leave the next day. I did a Coconut Cruise for 7 days but if u are more tech savi than me you can pick the islands u want and book them and then book transfers between then, it will probably be cheaper. Don't miss it , it was the highlights of my time in Fiji. | 8
