Fiji in January

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi all,

My wife and I will be in Fiji for 10 days in January landing in Nadi, we are both in our early fifties and are experienced travelers. We have considered some of the package tours of the Yasawa Islands such as Awesome Adventure Tours to simplify our plans but they seem pricey. We are interested in some beach time, snorkeling, caving, Kayaking etc, we enjoy eating and socializing but do not want to be in a major party zone. What would be the recommended method of planning in Fiji, would we need to book ahead for accommodation on the islands? Is there much to see on the main Island?
We enjoy being adventurous as we are both fit and athletic and don't mind spending in the mid price range if it is worthwhile, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

you need to read up on which islands you want to stay at - don't leave it til you're on the Yasawa Flyer as they will allocate you islands that you may not normally want to visit - you can't leave the boat unless you have a booking. I recommend Oarsmans Bay Lodge on Nacula Island (the last island you can stay at in the Yasawas) Have fun

On Nacula I can recommend Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, which is next to Oarsmans. I spoke to a woman who stayed at both and she preferred Blue Lagoon by far.

It's very resorty (in a good way), loads of activities to choose from (a village visit is highly recommended, as is the underwater cave tour) and there are communal tables for the excellent meals (good for socializing).
I stayed in a dorm (no bunks, airco and 8 beds only) and the shared facilities were very clean. The bungalows looked very nice from the outside though. As I was travelling alone and for a long period I could not afford that, but the dorm was fine (btw I'm in my fifties as well). The staff is lovely, the bar another good place for socializing (no hard partying when I was there) and the snorkelling on the beautiful house reef is amazing.

Another good place I stayed was on Waya Island: Octopus resort. It's a sister resort of Blue Lagoon and has a similar set up. Again: lovely staff, beautiful house reef, loads of activities etc, but a bit bigger than Blue Lagoon.

In 10 days you can stay at both. I know I would.
Enjoy!

I am completely in agreement with Lilau - have stayed at Octopus over many years, and Blue Lagoon twice - shortly heading to both again. (I'm 60s & don't like a party scene, but both have good opportunities for socialising - or not as you prefer). You can purchase single trip tickets for the Yasawa Flyer (not advertised on their website but just email them). I'd go to Blue Lagoon first if doing both, then stop off at Octopus for second half - makes the final return trip in to Nadi that much shorter and more bearable!
