Fiji island hopping - backpacking

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi. I'm going to Fiji for a month and was thinking to visit some small islands as well. I have seen that there is a ferry linking Viti Levu with Ovalau, Vanua Levu and Taveuni. For other island that I'm planning to visit (castaway island, Monuriki, Kuata, naviti, namuya Lailai, Nacula and Kadavu) I haven't find any ferrys just boats and I have seen different options, but was thinking if there is any other alternative? They require that u book everything at least 24 hours in advance and also reservation of the hostel... I didn't plan anything, but if i will like one place I may stay there for longer and the itineraries that i have wrote above is only rough plan... So if anyone of you guys know for some other cheap options that would be awesome. Im planning to stay at backpackers as accomodation is not priority for me, so im looking for cheapest option... Oh yeah and if anyone have visit this islands could you please reccomend something to see/do there? Im not really party animal, so I prefer smaller, quiet places... Im more into culture, meeting local people, hiking, rater than partying and drinking all day and lying on the beach and doing nothing :D Cheers, Katja

Kadavu gets regular 'local' boats from Suva.

The others on your list are mostly served by tourist shuttles, though those that have Fijian villages on them are also served by less regular local boats mostly out of Lautoka - ask there. For uninhabited and resort-only islands the tourist services are pretty much your only option.
