Fiji on budget

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi all!

I will soon start a long journey trhough Australasia including 14 days on the Fiji's and due to the long time I'll be quite on budget. I've read through some of the previous entries in the forum and found some ideas on where to go (and rahter not use the Bula Pass and similar stuff ;-) ) - but was wondering which of the islands are suitable for a smaller budget? I do not actually seek that much of party (maybe one or two nights max.) but mainly want to see the landscape, relax on the beach, go hiking and swimming, see some cultural/historical sights and enjoy some alone time. Would you have any hints and ideas for me? Would you recommend homestays for a single travelling female?

Thanks in advance!
Becca

Stick to the bigger islands for the lowest prices and most things to see.
You can find accommodation for ca 10 USD or so in dorms in main towns.

I did a homestay on Levuca and it was sweeeet (I was the only guest and they guarded me like... arm... whatever! against possible inelligible local suitors). Levuka is Fiji's first capital, and it's a nice colonial town. Lovely. Don't stay at the Royal if you do go: they've got bedbugs :( Though do go there for a coffee and they have internet as well.

I also really recommend going to Caqalai!!!!!!! Tiny island, basic thatched bure on the beach, you pay F$60 per day for a hut + all meals, it's extremely low key but one of the nicest islands! And amazing snorkelling straight from the beach. Also very good diving with Sharon. It's not for everyone, but really cool. You can contact Ovalau Watersports for information both on Levuka homestays and Caqalai. They can also book them for you.

What's the cheapest average price per day you can get away with in Fiji? Planning to go there but, I'm getting little "scared off" by the prices. And also, any tips of cheap activities you can do? Or special places I should see? I appreciate every tip I can get!

#5 I think I was spending about F$50-60 a day, but that's excluding diving. I was terrified by the prices as well, but if you head to the less touristy places, i.e. the east, it's not that bad. I didn't really do much when I was there, apart from quite a lot of fantastic diving off Caqalai and Ovalau, as it was the very end of a nine-month trip, I mostly relaxed on the beach, but in such nice surroundings.
