fiji to other south pac islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

hi friends,

i have a ticket from auckland to fiji in late october, and it seems that there are no good ways that i can find to get to other islands without going back to nz. i'm looking at vanuatu, tonga, samoa, cooks, or anywhere really. i am up for adventure, multi-day ferry rides, sailboats, submarines, cheap flights. cheap. cheap is good.
ideas? i have a month to kill before returning to nz sometime in early december.

At the moment there is one flight a week between Cook Islands and Fiji. However, this service will be discontinued as of Oct 27.. I'm not sure about the scheduling of the other countries. I assume you have googled Air Pacific, Air NZ etc etc...? If not, that would be a good way to start your research :)

Air Pacific route map here
You could quite easily fill in a very interesting month staying in Fiji, though..

Fji is actually the best connected country in the South Pacific, and has direct flights to many of its neighbours.
Flights to Tonga, Vanuatu and Samoa are the cheapest.
See the Bula fares on the Air Pacific website - note that they are in Fijian dollars.

There are no regular passenger boats from Fiji to other countries.

We went from Fiji to Vanuatu to New Caledonia and back to Fiji last year - traveled with Air Vanuatu and Air Calin. Check out airtimetable.com for information and links to airlines in the South Pacific.

thanks!
i was checking out airpacific.com, and their route map does not correspond with the destinations offered when you try to book it. is it fairly easy to roll up and get fares to other islands (on any airline) last minute? i suck at this planning thing, and i always just get caught up in spontenaiety anyway.

i appreciate your feedback... and laszlo - thanks for your help with PNG last yr. that place is epic. changed my life.

Just got back from Fiji. I would suggest that you could spend a month easily in Fiji and not get bored. We started in the Cooks, which I found a bit boring, and then went to Fiji which I thought was an incredible place to explore, especially if you stay away from the prefabricated cultureless backpacker reality in the Yasawas.

I suggest Caqalai, Levuka, and more than anything, a visit up to Navala and Bulou's Lodge.

Navala is one of the most incredible things I have ever seen! Bulou's is not the cheapest place, but being up there and seeing Navala with Tui changed me as a person and was well worth the money. Wish I could have stayed longer.

I have also heard good things about Bobo's Farm outside of Levuka, but cannot vouch for it because we didn't make it up there.

Good luck!
