Fiji with a baby-help!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

hello

My husband and i are planning to take a much needed break to Fiji in May. We want to stay in a good resort where we can snorkel of the beach on the property.Any recommendations ?

Nanuya Resort in the Yasawas would be my choice, fairly small and personal, but there are plenty of others that are more expensive.

If you ask in advance they could probably arrange a baby sitter too.

Cheers,
Peter

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort on Nacula Island and sister resort Octopus on Waya Island (in the Yasawas) have good house reefs, accessible from the beautiful beaches, a relaxt atmosphere, good food and friendly staff. It's very easy to meet people there, as meals are served at communal tables and they tend to have a nice mix of clientele.

Thank you for your advice. Looks like Nanuya might be booked can anybody recommend any other similar properties

If you are a keen snorkeller, take an underwater light with you.
We found the resident Lion Fish at Nanuya Resort.

I would second Lilau's recommendations. I have had my grandchildren with me many times at both Octopus and Blue Lagoon Beach Resort (starting from 1 year of age - oldest now 10). Both cater well for families and can arrange very good babysitters at a reasonable rate if you and husband wanted to go snorkelling together (or in the evening for dinner). Your only problem might be getting accommodation at those at fairly short notice - they are often well booked up ahead. If they are booked up, the same management are opening another resort - Paradis Cove - opening date 1st July - they might have something. I'm sure it will be run similar lines to the other two, I would go so far as to guarantee that. You can check out the websites for all three - they also have FaceBook pages with lots of photos.

Both are very good. Blue Lagoon is a somewhat smaller operation, so less people. Octopus has a pool with deck chairs around it, BL doesn't have a pool. Food/staff/activities/atmosphere equally good in both places. I liked the house reef in BL slightly better, but that's me.

Blue Lagoon is on the far end of the Yasawas, it's the last stop of the Yasawa flyer, so longer travel time. Octopus is a lot closer to Denarau and they have their own transport boat, which is a bit more expensive than the Flyer, but also faster. If your flight is inconvenient for the Flyer, which leaves at 8.30 a.m., you have to stay overnight in Nadi. In that case it might save you time if you're able to get a seat on the resort boat on the day of arrival.

Can't help with the bungalows, I stayed in a dorm and once in a bungalow without ensuite, but Poppy's looked really nice. It's right on the beach, next to the beach bar.

Hope this helps. Have fun! I mist admit I'm a tad jealous!!

If you are considering Poppys at Octopus, also think about the Point bures if they are available, similar price range. South Point is further from the centre of the resort and so is more private, but swimming from the front of that is not possible from around half to low tide due to the coral shelf. Poppys is right in the middle of the resort, next to the restaurant, pool, bar. Better if you want to be in the centre of things. Although the resort boat could be better in terms of timing I would hesitate to take it with a baby - would probably be ok if seas are smooth but you bounce around a bit if not. I'm happy to use it most times, but definitely a better ride on the Flyer with a little one.
