I am traveling alone to Fiji, what should I expect. I am an African American male and would like some travel advice. Where should I go and where should I stay away from.
Well, being African American won't affect anything. Pick up a copy of LP's Fiji guide, or even better, the Moon Handbooks guide to Fiji. Two main islands, lots of smaller ones. Two large cities, Suva and Nadi. Nadi is not too hot, Suva at least has some culture. Take buses on the mian island, try ferries to the outer islands if you have the time. Popular tourist islands are the Mamanucas and Yasawas, NW of Nadi. The former are closer and more visited, latter less visited buut getting more touristy each yr. Consider Ovalau, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, all basically a bit east of the main island of Vanua Levu. Only places to stay away from are the back street bars in Suva at maybe 1am and onwards, lots of drunks and occasional fights. But that's not much to avoid for a whole country. In general it's a pretty safe and very friendly country. Nadi has lots of tourist shops and the hawkers almost try to drag you in. Just so no thanks and keep walking. | 1
Most Fijians look a lot more 'African' than anyone from the USA. | 2
I agree with both above. You will certainly blend in. | 3
