Getting from Yasawas to Savusavu in a day

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

It has to happen. On a budget. October 4th. Help! The two destinations are really not far from one another; it seems ridiculous to take a roundabout way via Vitu Levu. Not to mention the fact that it would take two days!

Probably impossible - certainly impossible on a budget. You will have to get back to Nadi Airport to connect with a flight to Savusavu and the only way to do that is seaplane from the Yasawas. Last year that cost us FJ$300 per person and if the weather is not good they will cancel the flight anyway, can't be guaranteed in advance.

This is the Pacific you are talking about. Nothing "has to happen" on one day. Relax, and enjoy island time.

One thing I have learnt about traveling in the South Pacific is island time. Almost nothing runs on time and transport plans may have to be rearranged or flexible to allow for this. I always allow time between connections if I can and try and allow a few days to book tours or trips as they often don't happen on the originally planned day. And even doing this my travel plans have still been disrupted sometimes.

My advise is don't try and go too many places in too short a time. Stay in one place for no less that 4-5 days that way you will get to relax and enjoy it instead of always stressing about getting to the next place on time. I don't think what you are expecting to do is realistic for the South Pacific. I suggest you simplify your itinerary and plan on less destinations.

FYI Here's a few examples where my transport has been disrupted:

In Fiji the public bus was 2 hours late, they are suppose to come every hour.

Also in Fiji my supposedly booked airport taxi transfer never came and I had to wait for them to call another taxi.

In Solomon Islands we had to fly to Sege from Honiara without most of our luggage as the weight limit for the plane had been overbooked (I think it had changed from a slightly larger plane to a smaller plane). Our luggage arrived at the resort the next morning.

On the trip home from the Solomons our flight was delayed by 2 days as there was a problem with the plane. This meant we had to rebook our connecting domestic flights in Australia.

In Samoa we had to cancel our day trip to Savaii as the ferry wasn't running due to the weather. We had allowed 3 days on which this trip could have happened and still we weren't able to make it work.

And while these disruptions can be annoying you learn to adjust your plans and make the most of being in these beautiful islands even if you are 'stuck' there for 2 extra days. :)

There are no boats between the Yasawas (where the population is quite low) and Vanua Levu (the island Savusavu is on). Only chance would be to take a Turtle Airways flight to Nadi, then switch to a Pacific Sun flight to Savusavu. This is definitely not cheap, but then neither is the Yasawa Flyer...

I got a quote from Island Hoppers. It was more than what my entire trip will cost from Toronto!

Sun Air is Fiji's domestic airline. Unfortunately, the airline schedules only a few flights- if that- between
the main island, Viti Levu and the outer islands in a hub-and-spoke route system. www.fiji.to
Unless you're Malcolm Forbes, Sun Air is the only realistic option for flying!
