Highlights of Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi, my husband and I are planning a trip to Fiji in July, and I am wondering what the highlights would be? My husband would like to dive part of the time, we like a little time on beautiful beaches and great islands (hopefully with snorkeling for me), and inland trips to villages, treks, and if there are any nice towns to visit (I am thinking the museum in Suva, and I heard the market on Saturday is good).

We do not need budget accommodation, and a few stays at really nice places would be nice. I am thinking 2 1/2 weeks.

Thanks for any help!

not sure how long you are staying but there are 2 local cruise companies Blue Lagoon and Captain Cook, who do different length tours, he can dive each day , you can snorkel and see lots of the Fiji islands as well, rather than being stuck at one place, the museum in Suva is good as is the saturday market, you could do an overnight there and then travel around the Kings road by bus. If you love waterfalls there is a boat trip up the Navua river, the cruise and this boat trip will also take you to a village and or school.

Thanks!

If you consider heading east to Suva, then think about a trip to the island of Ovalau, and the old town of Levuka.

It's well off the main holiday island trail through the Yasawas, etc. There are a couple of lagoon resort islands (Leleuvia and Caqalai), a homestay or two, inland hiking/walking tours. This covers the main appeal of the place as destination.

The outer reef seems to attract divers for one reason or another (a place for hammerhead sharks, I heard one person mention) but the snorkelling is average at best.

We volunteered in Fiji for 2 years and tried a few things.
We did several Blue Lagoon cruises and they were special, particularly a 7 day cultural cruise that included northern Lau.
I think Blue Lagoon has gone now, so check Captain Cook.

The other particularly spectacular day involved chartering a Beaver float plane, flying to the northern tip of Viti Levu and then down the full length of the Yasawas, stopping along the way at Nanuya Resort for lunch.
Nanuya Resort is a great spot for a few nights too. They have a dive operation and a good house reef. Recommend it.

One of our favourite spots for a couple of nights was VoliVoli at the northern tip of Viti Levu. We could get there by local bus from Lautoka. They have an excellent dive operation.
Soni, the barman runs 4WD inland trips to villages etc.

Down south, google "Rivers Fiji".

Cheers,
Peter
