How busy is Fiji late August?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hello.

I am visiting Fiji late August/Early September, but I'm not sure on the exact date, as it depends on how long I spend in Oz and New Zealand.

Will I be able to get somewhere to stay when I arrive at this time of year. Would like to go to the Yasawas, but anywhere with a nice beach, good snorkelling and hking would do (suggestions welcome).

Thanks in advance

It was not particularly busy during my own trip in August-September. I usually phoned ahead a day or two in advance if I wanted to stay somewhere in particular. Some popular hotels did tend to be booked up on any particular day (a day or two advance booking solved this problem) -- but this also had to do with the relative lack of accommodation options in some of the places I visited.

Your three items aren't easy to combine out of just one base/resort. I stayed on Waya island (Yasawas) precisely because of the hiking trails connecting villages. The reefs come right up to the shore at many spots. So, although there is a sandy beach, it's not always easy to swim offshore. Quality of snorkelling depends on the specific resort.

Ovalau (east of Viti Levu) has good hiking as well, but you need to go to one of the satellite resort islands of Leleuvia or Caqalai for the beach and snorkelling activity.

Taveuni is also great for jungle hikes, but that's further afield, and the beach/snorkel part would also have to be done from a different center than the hiking.

Octopus Resort in the Yasawa's is great :) if you want a budget property.
The best beaches are in the Yasawa's and Mamanucas. The best hiking is on Taveuni. There are waterfalls and more palm trees than you have ever seen. It is a beautiful undiscovered paradise. But no real white sweeping azure blue water beaches. There are beaches but people go here to hike and dive.

August - October is historically the busy season in Fiji as the weather is the driest.

sunny regards,

I forgot about Octopus Resort, which is on Waya island. That might be a good combination of beach, snorkelling plus hiking.
