Is it worth going to Taveuni?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Were heading to Nadi and gonna do the mamanucas and coral coast...the flight to Taveuni is expensive..wanted to get some advice if its worth it? Is it enough to just do Nadi and mamanucas or if we are coming all the way to Fiji is checking out Taveuni a must see? We like to explore, hikes, snorkelling..not big resort people...just wanna be out and about and explore.

Is it worth it?

It is good for hikes, birdwatching, basically nature in general.
Otherwise,it is not a must see.
I would say my earlier recommendation, Ovalau, is more of a must see, and more easily and cheaply accessible, too.

What is ovalau? It looks like its an island east of Suva....whats it like there?
Were thinking doing Nadi, checking out the mananucas on day trips since its too expensive to stay on the islands...then driving down to the coral coast...so maybe going to Ovalau from there would be an option but what is a must see about it?

Ovalau is a scenic island also good for hiking, has some small, beachy islands offshore, but is most notable for Levuka, Fiji's most historic town.
I think it packs in more diversity than Taveuni.

There are no must sees in most Pacific island nations.

if it was in your budget I would do a 7 day local cruise, that way you see Mamanucas, Savusavu, Taveuni and Ovalau.

If not after your Mamanuca visit, check out Beach House on the coral coast, have a day in Suva, go to Leluvia and they can drop you at Ovalau, then you could continue on by bus around the main island and see lots of country.

The cruises are too expensive...were on a budget.

If we had to pick between Taveuni for 3 days or Yasawas for 3 days which one would you recommend?

5

shame because the cruises show you so much of fiji, I would do the Yasawas and then go around the island by bus, with the places I suggested. To get to Taveuni is not that cheap and while there are waterfalls and things, there is only road on one side of the island.

We lived in Lautoka for 2 years.
Taveuni is stunning, the Yasawas are stunning, a local bus trip around Viti Levu is an adventure. I would give the Coral Coast a miss. The Mamanucas are pretty, but mostly party islands.

Cheers,
Peter
