Koroyanitu National Park / Abaca

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I'd like to spend some time in this area when I'm in Fiji. Ideally I'd like to do some independent trekking and camping. Does anyone know if this is possible? I seem to remember reading somewhere that camping was possible in/near Abaca. Failing that what are the accommodation options?

I'd like to mainly do some day walks that don't require a guide, but maybe one guided trek too - budget limitations mean that I can't afford many guided trips! I'm thinking of spending about 5 days in the area, but don't want to travel to and fro from Nadi everyday. I also dont want to exhaust my guideless trek options and find I've done everything I can do on my own in just a few days!

Any hints gratefully received

Thanks,

Dave

You might check out some of those "stay in a village" websites. some are a bit controversial--as to how much the villagers actually get---but it is a good way to have a home base in the hills and take walks from there. And village guides from where you would be staying would be pretty cheap.

I think there are some organized walks up the Sigatoka Valley, this is approached from the south coast.

The villages in this park supposedly offer homestay accomodation - this was widely advertised when I was in Fiji. I think there is also a guesthouse.

David Stanley's South Pacific and Fiji Handbooks covered these options, too - not sure about LP.

I have been to Abaca. Before going there i stayed three nights in Viseisei village through www.fijianfamilies.com. It is already 6 months when the operator of the project warned me they would stop their activity due to a lack of interest. Note that the accommodation fee was on a voluntary basis.
Anyway, by a pure luck my host had relatives up in the village and arranged a ride for me.
Suppose you want leave your options open and work it out tentatively you may show up somewhere on the way (or in Viseisei itself) and get a ride uphill.

I want to do the same thing. I don't suppose you're going in September? I don't know if I should trek all by myself.

I have the lonely planet guide and they give a number to arrange village stays in Abaca; but I'd really rather stay in a hotel. It looks like the ones near 'garden of sleeping giants' may be close enough but I have no idea where the trailheads are.

Sorry i dont remember exactly, where the tracks start either. I took as almost 1 hour to get there from Viseisei village. I suggest you book it through a hostel/hotel in Lautoka or Nadi or hire a local (best option for me). I wouldnt dare to stagger up by myself.

I saw the hut up in Abaca, and its suitable more for adventurous and hardcore campers. I would've stayed there at least for one night, though. The whole area is breathtaking. It reminded me of Tatra Mountains in SLovakia a bit!
