Layover Nadi Airport

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi folks,

I've got a 9 hour layover and I'm looking into ideas for what to do while there. I've read about the Hindu Temple, which I would love to see in addition to the Gardens of the Sleeping Giant. Can I bus (or get a taxi) to the Temple/Gardens and back to the airport. Also, is it too ambitious to try to fit both in there or should I pick one? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Best wishes!

they are in different directions but not impossible, I haven't been to the Gardens yet but have driven by the temple many times, it is amazing, you should be able to see both, taxis are cheap and the quickest way for you to get around,

Nothing really to see around the airport, though depending on what time you are arriving you could maybe do the sleeping giant /orchid farm? This wouldnt give you any extra time to do Nadi though.

Alternatively you could also head over (by taxi) to Denerau Island. If you got dropped at the marina you would have time to catch the bula bus around the island, maybe check out on of the resorts there, and also look around the marina and have something to eat etc.

See if you can take the bus, it's much cheaper. The local bus stops in front of the International departures terminal. Bus companies like Pacific Transport or Sunbeam offer good service at an inexpensive price.

with only a few hours to see the sights I'd be taking a taxi rather than waiting for a bus to arrive. I agree the buses are good and normally travel by them but in this instance time is of the essence.

Taxis are plentiful at the airport - get a price from one to take you to the temple, and to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant (if you like gardens, that is). Also worth going on from the gardens to Lautoka, the market there is interesting to visit. Not much "local colour" around Denarau - hotels and shops at the marina, only for tourists really.

I second #5's suggestions. We had a 9 hour layover before our flight back to the US from Nadi. The taxi driver mistakenly (?) took us to Lautoka instead of Port Denarau, which is where we asked him to take us. It was not a mistake after all. After he let us out, we walked down the street to the local produce market. We were actually looking for a bus to take us back to the airport. Talk about serendipity. Anyway, we ended up spending the afternoon at the local market. We ate lunch and just hung around for a few. As mentioned, there was lots of local people out of the tourist area.

The cab ride was 30 FJD, and we took the bus back to the airport for 3FJD each. Same route.

I agree with #5, skip Denarau, unless you are into fancy tourist accommodation and an utterly boring atmosphere. Not the real Fiji at all. The Garden of the Sleeping Giant makes for a nice couple of hours, but I think a trip to Laotoka is a better choice, that way you get to see something of Fiji, not just a garden. If you aren't too pressed for time, a local bus is the way to go, and if you are, maybe a bus to Laotoka and a cab back.

Thank you all for your input! Much appreciated!
