Living in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi guys

My husband has been short listed for a teaching position in Fiji (Suva) and was wondering if anyone can offer some advice about moving to and living in Fiji for 12 months. We will also have a 1 year baby with us.

Looking forward to any feedback

Thanks Kylie

I don't know any of your details (ie housing, medical insurance, employment package, whether you have been to Fiji before etc etc) but my initial response would be - go for it. I'm not sure whether you are looking for practical advice ie moving companies (Jetta were awesome for our move - but I'm not sure if you are from Australia!), or emotional support, but it's a bit difficult to give practical info without knowing where you are moving from. Uprooting a family is so much easier when your child is young. We moved from Australia to Cook Islands a couple of years ago with two teenagers, and had to deal with the associated angst of kids leaving good friends, schooling etc. All resolved happily, but I thought at the time that it would have been great to go when they were toddlers! Fiji is a great country, and 12 months will fly by. If anything, I'd be looking at a longer contract, if possible.. Good luck..

Hi there,

Nice! I'm a Canadian, living in Victoria, who just got offered a job as an instructional designer for the USP. I've done some research about Fiji, found a few useful blogs by expats. We should pool resources! And it would be nice to know someone there too.

The start date is not yet decided, but my partner and I will be moving to Suva together. The work situation looks pretty grim for him, from what I can tell so far, so he's thinking of taking a few courses at the USP.

Where are you from? When will you guys be leaving?

Cheers,
Myriam
