Long Term Accommodation in Suva

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I am doing volunteer work in Suva for 12 to 18 months, starting in June 2007, and am wondering if anyone can recommend cheap rooms/rentals/sharehouses? Also interested in budget places for snorkelling/doing a dive course on the other islands.

Raintree is a hotel on the outskirts of Suva. Is that a good place for an 18 month stay? There are less expensive hotels than Raintree within Suva itself.

The South Seas Private Hotel is run by a youth-oriented organization. They have a dorm and kitchen facilities. I met a few people staying there for 1-2 months while working on volunteer or study projects. Perhaps the people at the South Seas could help you find some longer-term accommodation.

Neither would I recommend Sunset Appartments, it's okay for 1 or 2 nights - 12-18 months? no way. Check ads in the Fiji Times: students from USP (University of the South Pacific) "looking for room mates". Another tip comes to my mind, go to Colonial Lodge in Suva, talk to Suzie, the owner. Her dad (Emosi, who formerly run Leleuvia Island) has some private accommodation which he rents out to USP students. Even if this does not work out - they might be able to lead you in the right direction.
