Long term in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi guys

My husband and I are possibly moving to Fiji early next year. Does anyone have any information on the following:

Cars: how expensive is it to buy and run a car in Fiji

Baby supplies: We have a (then) 1year old baby and want to know if it's easy to take over his cot etc or are able to buy this type of thing there ?

Thanks Kylie

Several baby-type shops in Suva, probably Nadi and other large centers as well. Not sure on cars, but petrol is expensive.

Hi Kylie,

I am just finishing up a 2 year contract in Fiji. I am not sure where you are writing from so not sure what would be "expensive" for you. I am from NZ so i am making a comparison to there.

Cars: yes cars are very expensive in Fiji. Even modest 2nd cars can set you back $FJ 10,000 and as the previous poster said, petrol is expensive. The other thing to bear in mind is that there are a limited number of brands of cars here and if can be very difficult (and expensive) to obtain parts for these brands so choose your model wisely. However if you are here on a contract it is easy to get finance for a car and there are pleanty of cars available (and i am talking Suva - which part of Fiji are you moving to?)

In terms of baby cot - definately take it with you! The range here is limited and the prices are very expensive, in fact we took over a cot from NZ for someone here in Fiji and it was half the price in NZ as here.

Hope that helps, any further questions let me know
