Money changing in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Do you get a better rate changing with a money changer in downtown Nadi than at the airport?
Can you get as good a rate with £ sterling as with $. Can you change travellers' cheques in Fiji and if so will you get as good a rate as for cash? Thanks.

Yes, as I was told last year. The local money changers offer a better deal than the banks, so I presume it's the same for the airport. Don't know for sure, about the airport, though. I only took cash so I can't help with the difference between cash and TC rates.

I would take cash and shop around in town. Can't advise between US and Sterling. Rates can vary quite a bit. In Lautoka I could get better rates for larger amounts.

Cheers,

So maybe I'll change a small amount at the airport and then change the bulk with a money changer downtown.
Do resorts in remote areas typically charge a commission if you pay with Mastercard or Visa?

Some do, some don't. http://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g308257-i10203-k4377764-Mana_credit_card_fees-Mana_Island_Mamanuca_Islands.html

It seems to be standard practise to charge 3% commission when using a credit card.
