Navala and interior roads: unpaved?

We had planned to visit Navala with a rental car and keep driving all the way to south, until we have been reading that all or most of the interior is unpaved and requires a 4x4. Most of those reports were written a few years ago, though. Therefore, any improvements recently that made the possibility to drive there easier?
