Non touristy places in fiji?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Im travelling to Fiji in January next year. I will be flying into Nadi. I would like to go there and camp and enjoy Fiji without all the chaos of tourists. Can anyone suggest any quiet places or remotes places ?
The Yasawas, Mamanucas, and the mainland from Lautoka to the Coral Coast are the touristy parts, so go anywhere else based on whatever your interests are. Vanua Levu and Taveuni are the typical destinations for people looking to avoid tourists, but still have some tourism infrastructure. Keep in mind that what's considered touristy in Fiji and the South Pacific is pretty tame and quiet compared to what's touristy elsewhere in the world. For instance, something that'd pass as being quiet and remote in Thailand or Bali is still more chaotic than the Yasawas... | 1
"go there and camp" - not usually possible. Fiji does not have camping grounds, and all land is owned by the local villages. Some of the smaller 'resorts' in outlying islands will allow you to camp but you would find that the cost of doing so would be very similar to what you would pay in a dorm. There are some places which have village stays, or you could look at very basic places like Caqelai Island off Ovalau (Eastern side of Fiji), which is a tiny island with a small locally run 'resort' - not at all touristy. | 2
The great thing about visiting Fiji is that, even though it is famous on the world-tourism circuit, "all the chaos of tourists" has bypassed it. Even among the more popular destinations you hear mentioned often- the Yasawa Islands and Taveuni for example-- there are only a few hundred visitors dispersed over a large area geographically. I agree with | 3
There is a lovely little campground on Taveuni - Beverleys - I called in there while we were staying up the road - it is right on the water - 20 min walk from the airport - you can either use your tent or theirs - camp kitchen looked ok - didn't see the bathroom but all looked clean | 4
Check out Bobo's guesthouse on Ovalau | 5
