octopus resort

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

g'day,
i've heard alot of good things about this resort in fiji and will hopefully go there next year after oz. if anyone has stayed there already can you tell me if theres alot to do outside the resort? are there shops and activities on the rest of the island or is everything confined to what goes on in the resort?? also any recommendations of must-dos would be greatly appreciated!
cheers

Outside the resort the main activity is hiking. Waya island is nice for hiking, which is the reason why I went there, rather than to a different Yasawa island. There are small-scale budget-type resorts at other locations on the island and 3 or 4 settlements. You'd have to figure on a day's outing to visit most of them and get back to Octopus. I thought Waya was a good island to visit if a person was interested in having a look at local island life -- as contrast to total immersion in a holiday resort.

Octopus resort is the best/most upscale resort on the island. It'll only be more of the same but with fewer facilities at the other island resorts. So, no reason to go anywhere else for activities/facilities. The main thing would be the hiking for itself, and of course to sightsee the island.

The local settlements do not have shops in the sense that you probably mean.

For me, there are no 'musts' in life, except those that you choose and make for yourself. For example, I went to Waya for the hiking. I am pretty sure that most holidaymakers to the Yasawas have zero interest in hiking..

I have some photos of the south end of Waya island on my BLOG.

I just got back from Fiji yesterday and stayed at Octopus resort the last 5 days there. It is very well run, clean and lots of fun. I really enjoyed staying there. You can hike up to the top of a peak, 3 and a half hours up, or just hang out the beautiful beach and snorkel. If you have the budget, stay in a bure, open air showers.

The island is very rustic and the only way to get around is on foot or by boat. You aren't going to find modern shopping malls or trendy bars there.

Apart from hiking, snorkelling/diving and a few other activities arranged by the resort, there's really not a lot to do, which is the appeal of the place. You can visit the local village, and I woud recommend going to the church service, even if you're not religious. The singing is quite fantastic, plus, nothing else happens on Sundays anyway.
