Oh dear - Martial Law reinstated in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Full report from Melbourne's Age" newspaper

That's horrible.

I actually came on here to post about this...I go over in November, and was planning to go to Suva (where my grandad was born and spent his early years) for a day or two. If the situation is the same, is it safe to go there? I read somewhere (Smart Traveller I think) that people are being randomnly subjected to questioning on the street etc etc.

Yes, Im sure you will be safe. Go back in TT and read postings from others here about their experiances during the coups and Im sure youll agree that tourists are safe.

3

Although a lot of tourists don't go to Suva at all - they fly into Nadi and head stright to their resort or one of the outlying islands.

possum---I wouldn't worry about it affecting you much as a tourist. In all of the four coups in the last 20 yrs or so, few tourists were inconvenienced. The only main problems really related to the airport being closed for a few days during one of the bloody coups (and one upscale resort temporarily being taken over by the landowners for a day). . This latest was a bloodless takeover, unlike the previous one. Actually, Suva was evena bit safer from the latest reports, as police were patrolling the inner areas of suva late at night near the ngihtspots, which traditionally were not as safe as other places in Suva. so, I don;t think you should change your plans, but keep an eye on things to see that it doesn't escalate.

I'm also due to arrive in Fiji in November.

I might be wrong but I'm not at all worried about the situation, as horrible as it is. From what I've read on here and in books it seems like tourists are very rarely affected by the coup but it'd be a little unwise to openly discuss politics while there!
