One week in Fiji- where to go?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I'm actually going to be in Fiji for two weeks, but staying in a resort for my friends wedding for one of the weeks. I'm planning on coming over a week early to make the most of my trip there, as the chances of getting back to Fiji anytime soon are pretty slim! So I'm hoping for your help- where to go in Fiji with only a week to play with? I'm looking for an area pretty inexpensive (the rest of my trip is costing a small fortune!) but somewhere I can experience the culture and maybe a gorgeous beach thrown in for good measure?

When I went to Fiji for about 3 weeks some time ago, I went to Taveuni, Kadavu and the Yasawas. With only one
week to fill on a budget- beaches, Fijian culture and a lot of fun can be had on the Fijian islands of Wayasewa and Waya.
The Fijian villagers of the island of Wayasewa run the Wayolailai Eco Haven Resort on this gorgeous volcanic island
of white sand beaches and tropical flora. Accomodation includes your 3 meals and I think dorm accom is about US $30.
You can also camp for less. Bures (thatched huts w/ en-suite facitlities) are considerably more, but sharing a room
can halve the cost. Excursions are available, scuba diving, village visits, meke (dance) ceremonies, and there's kava
drinking at night after dinner. The snorkeling right off the beach at the resort is great too.
( Check out their web-site www.bbcdi.ca/wayalailai) Transfer from Nadi's Denarau Harbor on the Yasawa Flyer in about
90 minutes so you're not using up the better part of a day changing locations.
The best part is that Waya island is right next door so if one week seems too long for one island, you can just hop over next
door. Waya has the famed Octopus Resort on a larger island, and a few other accomodations on the island.
The Octopus is more upscale and more expensive than most ( Website is:
www.octopusresort.com) but if you're willing to dorm it or camp, it's affordable.
