Our Fiji trip

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hey guys,

quick storey of what we did and some things to take care. We had a week in Fiji (in May) and wanted to see the main island and the Mamanuca group. First rented a scooter for 4 days to tour along the only road going around the main Island. Price was sweet (believe somewhere around 80FD) and service as well (delivering the bike to your hotel). Only minor set back we had was that the bike failed on day 3, so they had to send out a mechanic to fix it. We lost a day and when we explained our dislike to the company they accused us of having it used on a part of road that was closed.
Then went off to Amunuca resort on Toko Riki island for a couple of days. Again, not bad especially if you look to the price. Disadvantage is that all the kids of the village also use the swimming pool so don't expect to have a relaxing stay near the pool. But again, overall it was ok, plus they gave us a free room upgrade so again no whining on that.
Here as well, we had a problem checking out. We paid an advance of 105FD, 3 days before arriving. Problem was that they could not find the transaction back (even though we did it trough a Fijian bank, still holding the receipt), so eventually they would not bring these 105FD into count. Also if you go to these islands, it's all very rushed to get you back to the boat in time for the transfer so you don't have time to argue about your bill. Up to now, got nothing back. Still sending mails but they can't find the transaction back (hopeless by now I guess).

To counter, next time I will put more on paper for the scooter rental (so it's on paper which roads you can use and which you can't, and not having them change ideas when you bring it back) and keep a sharp lookout with the advances you pay.

Other than that, FIJI is great, best part of our trip. People are very warm, and I would definately recommend the scooter tour with a stay at the Beachhouse ,the rainforest lodge and VoliVoli Beach. Amunuca is good but I think there are better alternatives.

We appreciate the warning of this place...{:":}

Have been to Amunuca several times and the kids from the local village (which is on another island) only got to come and see where there parents worked and have a play in the pool on special occasions.
Doubt that this would have changed under the new management but maybe it has.
Were they there for every day of your stay or just one?

No, they were there every day. No worries though, love the beach and the view... Greetz
