Ovalau and Kadavu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

After some time in the Yaswas I have 10 days which I thought about splitting between Ovalau and Kadavu. Does anyone have any thought about whether I'm biting off too much? Is a few days in Ovalau enough time?

Sounds about right-m'self I'd just go to one or t'other but that's me I don't like to move around all that much.

There is no correct answer to this sort of question ... depends on the person. While someone might stay for 2-3 days, hit the 'highlights', then leave, someone else might stay a month.

I, like #1, don't like moving around much. With 10 days, I'd look at the time I'd have to spend getting from A to B, and conclude I'd rather spend the time swinging in a hammock. There's never enough time for those sorts of activities, and Ovalau is as good a place as any for that.

Regarding things to do around Ovalau: aside from the colonial era charm of Levuka, there's some hiking on Ovalau, a homestay, and two coral island resorts of Leleuvia and Caqalai for the hammocking, snorkelling, kava nights, and generally doing nothing in particular.

But, you might prefer 4 days on each of Ovalau and Kadavu (the extra days for travel) ... it's up to you, depends on what you want to do.

Don't split the 10 days. Decide on either Ovalau ( with maybe foreshore islands) or Kdavu. Think of travelling time (and cost)

What's the difference between Ovalau an Kadavu:

Transports:
- ferry: you have a daily ferry service to Ovalau - Kadavu maybe once or twice a week and ferry is often delayed.
- Flights: to Kadavu several times daily, but you have to continue to your chosen Resort by boat, pretty dear additional costs; Ovalau twice a day, F$ 5 for transport into town

Beaches: You have only small beaches on Ovalau, but you can easily access the foreshore Islands Leleuvia and Caqalai with dreambeaches-Those Islands are located right between Ovalau and Viti Levu, so you could arrange your transport Ovalau - Island - viti Levu; Kadavu: some resorts have access to very beautiful beaches, some have no beach at all.
Meals: On Kadavu you are resort bound - you have to eat resort meals - on Ovalau you can choose from several restaurants or choose accommodation to self-cater. Several supermarkets available. However meal plan on the islands Leleuvia and Caqalai.
Diving: both areas are great with ovalau being a bit more diverse (boat!)
Snorkelling: from shore - limited on Ovalau but great with the boat, excellent from leleuvia or caqalai
Kadavu - depends which place you choose
Costs: in average definetly more on Kadavu
