Political situation in Fiji - is it safe to work & live in Suva?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
I'm thinking of applying for a one year overseas posting in Suva, Fiji. Travel warnings advise to exercise a high degree of caution because of the unstable political situation and increase in violent crime, with expats & tourists being targeted. What is the situation really like 'on the ground' in Suva? Would I be safe walking around the city by myself during the day?
"Would I be safe walking around the city by myself during the day? " - generally, yes "Travel warnings advise to exercise a high degree of caution" - Australian warning? - If you look closely there are warnings on MANY countries, not just 3rd world places either - eg USA, UK.... | 1
I felt Suva safe enough even by night (being male) and perfectly safe by day. | 2
"that foreigners were never affected much by the political situation in Fiji. " -yes, even at the height of the coups. | 3
I was there in 2008 during the last coup and the only sign of it was a roadblock set up by govt troops because they were looking for a bus the rebels had taken. Our van went by without so much as a glance inside. | 4
the local economy is still pretty battered so petty crime would probably be up, generally it is a safe place and the locals are great, but you can't generalise so still take care as you would at home, street lighting can be a worry so be cautious out driving or walking at night. | 5
Fiji is as safe as most resorts can be for tourists, and expats residents, as long as you don't promote an overthrow of the government. Casual conversation about politics is not a problem. John | 6
