Political Unrest in Fiji - Safety!Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
I was meant to be traveling to Fiji in September but am now avoiding it due to current political troubles in the country, they are warning travelers to be extremely vigilant and that there is a threat, is no one else having this problem as well? or could shed some light on the situation> any help would be greatly appreciated! If you are staying in tourist areas ie away from Suva, then you should not alter your plans. During the various coups of the past tourists only knew of any troubles from news reports, not from witnessing action. | 1
Travel warnings are always out, as soon as a little something is happening here in Fiji - it's part of political sanctions to make the political leader(s) change their mind - which they won't. | 2
It's all bullshit. Don't take any notice of it. Surely you know by now that the media never reports honestly about Fiji. Jusy go. And have a good time. Suva is a wonderful city. | 3
I was in Fiji when the Commodore staged his Coup (2006?). Everyone I spoke to supported him. There were road blocks but the soldiers were very friendly. They were just protecting the people from looters, rapists, arsonists that usually take advantages of situations like this. | 4
travel warnings have been out for over the past two years since frank has taken over and dispossed a "democraticly" elected govenment (there never was such thing in fiji) ... | 5
The thing about Fiji is that such a massive chunk of its economy is based on the tourism industry, that any leader, democratically-elected or not, would not dare of changing that situation because tourism is the lifeblood of the nation. I'm heading out there for three months in January and I'm not worried in the slightest, news reporters talk about Fiji relatively, as if its an unstable African country or something along those lines. It's nothing of the sort, resorts will still be bustling, Suva will still be bustling etc. Go and have a fantastic time! | 6
I think the word 'current' covers the past 20 years. And 'troubles' is usually so low key that even if something happened you'd probably not notice.
if 'they' are your own government, then they are the last people you should be listening to | 7
Tourism is one of the biggest parts of their economy. But it used to be sugar - until the IMF told them to cut down on sugar production. IMF. Tony Soprano. Any difference ? | 8
"IMF. Tony Soprano. Any difference ? " LOL!!! | 9
Fiji is SAFE there are NO problems for tourists or locals for that matter, go enjoy and then tell all your friends what a great place it is so that more tourists go and support the country's major source of income...tourism. | 10
I've been advised by my STA who i booked my flights with not to travel to fiji, due to depart in 4 weeks, has anyone else had similar warnings from their agent? Deciding whether this is over cautiousness or it is in fact a fgood idea to rearrange travel plans?? | 11
you clearly havent read the previous 10 posts above nor the dozens more elsewhere on TT, so I'll spell it out for you. Fiji is VERY safe for tourists. In this and previous coups, all foreigners were fine. You will be fine. Your hoiliday will be great. GO and dont worry | 12
BTW Im going again (5th trip) with wife and 2 kids in June/July and cant wait | 13
