Questions on Fiji?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hello Everyone,
My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in Fiji leaving next week!
Soo excited..but have a few questions for the people that had the pleasure of going there.
1. I have an adapter for my blow dryer but do I also need a converter for it to work?
2. We are staying the first part of our trip in a rented house in Savusavu ... ..we like to explore on our own can you recommend any places that are a must see in that area?
3. The last 3 nights we stay in Nadi .....I definitely want to go out to the yasawas is there a day trip or do you have to stay over night there?
Thanks in advance for the info, Leah

Hi Leah,
Good choice for destination, I will try my best to answer your questions:
1. Adapters/converters not required if you are from Australia.
2. Never stayed in Savusavu....there will be someone else out there with recommendations.
3. If you want to do a day trip, they have a boat that visits the islands on an all day trip, stopping at resorts for a dip or a cocktail. Alternative is to jump on a plane, they can drop you off at a little island with a packed lunch, and I think you spend about four hours there, price for this is not extravagant and you get a birds eye view of other islands on the way.

Hope that helps!

Congratulations on your Silver Anniversary!
Power in Fiji is 240 volt 50hz AC and outlets take a two flat or three pin plugs- similar to Austalia or New Zealand.
When you're in Savusavu, you can check out the hot springs (too hot to swim in) near the wharf,
snorkel Split Rock in Savusavu Bay. There are really gorgeous beaches outside of town beyond the airport.
Another point of interest is the Waisali Rainforest Reserve with a waterfall in the jungle. Waisali is about
12 miles north of Savusavu.
I'd recommend staying overnight on one of the Yasawa Islands or Mamanucas, rather than being
confined to Nadi for three entire days ( Nadi wears thin after a few hours' visit.) Consider Waya Island or
perhaps Nacula or Nanuyalailai Island farther offshore. You can look up resorts on TripAdvisor.com

USA 110v devices on 220v power... This issue can be tricky for the non-geek types.

Here's a good rule of thumb: If it has a motor or a heating element (a blow dryer has both) do not plug it into a 220v outlet unless it has a little switch on the device that will allow you to manually switch to the 220v mode.

Most solid-state devices (like battery chargers) are designed to use 100v or 220v power. They will usually state right on the device that it's OK to use 220v.

Also... the little plug adapters that look like this: \ / don't change the voltage. They just transfer the 220 to the regular plug.

If you plug a 110v blow dryer that doesn't have a switch for 220v, or if it is set to 110v and you plug in into a 220v switch and turn it on, it will go POOF and you will be looking for another blow dryer.

For daytrips to the offshore islands, South Seas Cruises is a large operator with a lot of options.
ssc.com.fj They go to the Octopus Resort on Waya Island along with many of the other islands.

We really enjoyed our day trip to Mana Island with South Seas Cruises - not a long boat ride so lots of time to explore, snorkel, have lunch and sun - well worth the cost!

6

There's also the Savurekareka Mission just outsdie Savusavu which is well worth a visit. Well, I liked it :-))

There are lots of day trip options to the islands, but it's definitely preferable to go overnight. The further away you get from Nadi, the nicer it gets. As #2 says, Nadi wears thin quickly.

Thanks all for your suggestions! I was able to get us a nights stay at Octopus Resort! Maybe when we get there if they have. 2 nights available we might want to snag it!
In Savusavu now! I get it ..it's not the pristine blue waters here!
