Reservations needed?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

My husband and I will be meeting friends on a boat in Savusavu in September and plan to tour islands with them for 10-12 days. We'd like to hop off for a night or two every now and then to give them (and us) some privacy. I wonder if we need to try to plan ahead and make reservations? We're possibly going to start with a few days around Taveuni, then head towards the Yasawas if we have time for that.

I never booked ahead anywhere in Fiji, and never had trouble getting a room upon arrival.

Thanks Laszlo! What types of accommodations have you found to be most available? All classes? Mostly hostels and backpacker inns? Any tips on how to find the best of those available upon arrival at a town or island?

Away from the resort areas, there were mostly budget places. Not necessarily backpackers, but simple local hotels/guesthouses. Cheaper places are also found in the resort areas, while some expensive resorts are scattered in remote areas, too.
For more info on what's available where, I suggest getting the Lp Fiji guidebook.

depending what time of day you arrive, booking the first night might be smart but past that, I would not worry about it.
