Romantic Island Holiday

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi all

My husband to be and I are aiming to kick off our honeymoon in Fiji for a week of relaxation, cocktails and snorkelling. Unfortunately, the majority of the accommodation spots we have looked at so far seem to take pride in their 'mega hotel' status and family friendly attitude. I like kids as much as the next person but the idea of sharing my honeymoon with a bunch of the little darlings screaming and running around is not terribly appealing. If anyone can recommend somewhere they have stayed recently we would be much appreciated. What we're after is:
- Good beach
- Couple friendly
- Laid back
- Reasonable food (oh - and cocktails too!)

Thanks in advance,
K

Turtle Island? ;-)

Not that I've stayed there myself - I guess very few, if any, posters on this forum have.

Errrr and the little boy at the back of the room put his hand up and said in a timid voice ..'' I have madam ''

Went there 7 years ago for vacation. It was jam packed with Americans on their honeymoon and subsequently everything is geared towards that market. Lot's of men called Chuck and Brad wearing kahki chino shorts, baseball caps whilst attached to their blackberries with no social decorum whatsoever. I wouldn't go back.

However there are two other places I have been that you should give serious consideration to and in order of preference are

  1. Yasawa Resort.....one of the best resorts I have been to anywhere in the world. Beautiful beach, pool, incredibly friendly staff, and a thousand and one things you can do or not depending on whether you have the energy in the morning... :-) . It only has a limited number of Bure's (huts) and they have a Honeymoon Bure as well. Give it a serious consideration and if you go make sure you avail yourself of their Robinson Crusoe picnic where you are dropped off on a remote beach or sand bank and left to your own devices for the day 2 x :-)...

Yasawa is expensive enough to deter people from taking their kids although when I was there there was no formal ''anti kid '' policy. We just didn't see any.

  1. Vatulele Resort....Much the same as Yasawa but has a formal ''no kids under 12'' policy. Unlike Yasawa not as many acitivites to do and the dining can be a bit ''communal'' if you are on honeymoon. But it is gorgeous and beats Turtle Island.

When I was there a few months ago, Yasawa Resort had been closed for sg like a year.

Looking at Tripadvisor reviews it looks like it has re-opened after extensive rennovations. It was great before they did the renno's so it would be interesting to see how it has changed since.

4

Nanuya Resort would be the pick that we have stayed at.

Book early though, accomodation is limited and often fully booked (that tells you something).

Cheers,
Peter

castaway is a very pretty island - ticks all your boxes - yes there are kids there but not lots and they seem to be at kids club down the back - (part of the mamanuca group) and easy to get too - I also love Oarsmans Bay Lodge (part of the Yasawas) on Nacula Island - no pool (not needed with the beautiful beach) but very backpacker orientated - next door to oarsmans is Blue Lagoon resort - more upmarket. Do yourself a favour and don't stay on the main island - a lot nicer on the outer islands- happy honeymooning - kim

We are just back from 2 weeks in Fiji. We had the 2nd week at Lomani Resort - it was fantastic!
http://www.lomaniisland.com/
Max 45 people.
No one under 16 is allowed. They can stay next door at Plantation. The entrance archway has 2 statues with red eyes which light up at night to keeps the small kids out!

Access is 45min by fast cat from Denarau or you can fly in by plane, seaplane or helicopter.

We just got engaged several weeks before heading to Fiji & they had us booked as honeymooners even though we had booked it months prior.
The beach side bure was beautiful, with king size bed, indoor/outdoor shower, twin basins in the bathroom, chairs, lounges & large umbrella on the balcony.

The restaurant, 'Flame Tree' was good, as were the cocktails.
They have free access to 3 different types of kayaks, sailboards, catamarans, Stand Up Paddleboards, snorkelling gear & bikes.
They have 2 free activities each day, which can be booked. These vary from reef snorkelling, dolphin watching (we didn't see any they day), island resort hopping (not offered in our week), weaving, coconut products, etc.
Lomani is owned by the same people who own Plantation next door, so you can book on any of the tours they arrange (at cost) or use their facilities.
A nice freshwater pool, with lounges around it. Plenty of hammocks to laze they day away reading a book.
Negatives: if you can call them that:
- mozzies around the raised decks areas - they provide free insect repellent. They do fumigate around the coconut groves which surround the resort several times each week.
- tap water is brackish - they provide free bottled water in the rooms.
- mobile phone coverage every where.

There is a 3rd resort on the island - Musket Cove, which is a yachties heaven & has a great pool side bar too. Cocktails there were a bit cheaper than Lomani.

Overall we highly recommend it to couples looking for a laid back relaxing place to stay.
We loved it! Even contemplating their wedding package for our wedding.
