Savusavu is centered around a harbor, so the best beaches are a bit outside of town. There are
reasonable lodgings here since it's about $300 return to fly to Savusavu from Nadi. The areas around
Savusavu are stunning After all, this is where Jacques Cousteau's son, Jean Michel, decided to locate
his dive resort.

I spent 9 days in Savusavu in Feb 2012, all the decent beaches are way out of town toward Naidi, there are beaches out of town toward Jean Michael Cousteau resort mostly covered with trash, eat well before you go, food is terrible.

I doubt Gregg ate at Jean Michel's Resort. Sounds like he couldn't manage the price of admission.
