Savusavu and Tavueni

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Travelling to Fiji around August 17. Interested in exploring Tavueni and Savusavu. Can someone advice if pre-booking is necessary for budget hotels or book hotels, on arrival to Fiji.

There is not a lot of budget-end accommodation. What I did was to phone a couple of days in advance, just to make sure there was a vacancy at the place I wanted to stay at. As a matter of fact, in most cases even that wouldn't have been necessary. Taveuni and Vanua Levu (Savusavu) wasn't getting a lot of itinerant tourism (mainy resort tourism, mid to upper end), which did make it reasonably easy for those of us who just wanted to improvise.

If you do want to stay at a resort for diving or snorkeling (or just relaxing), then it might be a better idea to book further in advance. Sometimes you also have to arrange transport, etc. Depends on where you go ...

The homestay/guesthouse-type places also have a limited number of rooms. If you want to stay in one of those then some sort of advance booking would be a good idea - even if only of the phone-a-few-days-in-advance sort of planning. I think it depends in part on how long your trip lasts, and how willing you are to plan around vacancies - if the issue comes up.
