Savusavu- Taveuni ferry

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Anyone have any up to date info?
My head is spinning with miscellaneous bits of info, but can't tell if any of the options (Grace, Egi, Goundar) are still running and if so what is the (more or less) schedule.

Thanks

My links to those ferry companies are dead .. try this:

http://www.taveuni.com.au/services/ferry.htm

They have a link to a Goundar page that shows up empty.

My experience is that 'up-to-date' can mean 'who knows?'

For what it's worth there is (or has been) a small daily passenger only ferry that connects Vanua Levu with Taveuni (not the larger car ferries). This service won't have a web site. I only discovered the existence of this possibility after I had already arrived on Taveuni and wanted to get back to Vanua Levu. The above link hints at it under 'alternative ways to Taveuni', although they don't mention the small ferries. It will mean an early morning bus from Savusavu to a small ferry landing .. ferry usually left around 12:30 for a 2 hour crossing to Taveuni.

It's not popular with tourists (compared to Yasawas) so you really need to think Fiji time. My experience with travel on Fiji, esp. ferries (some flights also hit and miss) is to not think in terms of schedules and timetables. Better to ask when there and see what's happening for the next 2 weeks, and plan around that. You can usually get to where you want to go, eventually.

I took the direct night boat Suva - Savusavu four years ago. It arrived in Savusavu in the morning, stopped for an hour, and then followed to Taveuni; then back to Suva.

I don't have up-to-date information as of today, but when I took that boat it was super full of people, and it was scheduled regularly, at least once each two days. Personally, based on my experience, if I had to travel from Savusavu to Taveuni today, I would just go to Savusavu confident that I'll find something on the spot.

If you visit Taveuni I suggest to see if you find transportation to nearby Rabi Island; it's the island bought by the inhabitants of Banaba, in Kiribati
