Savusavu is a town. Taveuni is a large island. Where do you see the toss-up? Do you have a specific place on Taveuni in mind?

I wouldn't use Savusavu as a base for good snorkeling .. probably hunt around instead for a resort that fits my budget.

For walks/hikes, Taveuni in general has the clear advantage, probably a north end resort in Matei is the better base for that. Jungle hikes at Bouma is a common day trip activity.

Wine? I guess you'll have to pick your resort.

What Peter & Margaret said-- Taveuni for sure. The best diving/snorkelling is in the Somosomo Strait
which Savusavu is not near. Also, if you fly in to Taveuni, you'll be arriving at Matei which has the conglomeration of hotels and dining options in the area. And Bouma National Park is at the northern
end of Taveuni, so it makes for an easy day-trip from Matei to hike the rainforest, go for a dip in the waterfalls
and walk the beautiful Lavena Coastal walk. Have a great Trip!
