I have some concerns about security of my belongings in Fiji. Myself and my boyfriend are stopping in Fiji for three nights on the way back from NZ in february(Obviously I am aware we won't have time to see fiji-but we just want to relax on a beach and do some snorkelling-maybe a day of island hopping). I am travelling with my laptop and I want to stay somewhere that my laptop, passport ad tickets are secure while I'm out for the day. I am not a paranoid person, I'm not suggesting fiji is not safe, and I'm sure theft is rare. Regardless, no matter how rare, I want to take the precautions necessary to ensure that doesn't happen. Insured or not, I hardly want theft to ruin my holiday-I like to be cautious about that.
Most resorts let you store valuable items in the office. | 1
With only three nights, you can either stay at a place like Denarau and do day trips, or pick a resort on one of the nearby islands. | 2
You can always check your bags at the airport (check the airport's website, it mentions it there). That way you can stay wherever you want, and travel a bit lighter. | 3
OP, I,m rather like you in that I value security of myself and belongings. That said, Fiji is rather relaxed and as you are concerned, simply don't take valuables, take out travel insurance and be wary. Don't just stay at the Sheraton ONLY due to security - its a great hotel (Ive stayed there too), but its not the real Fiji - you could be anywhere. | 4
Thank you so much for the advice and for understanding my concerns-I just like to be cautious. I've travelled with friends of the "calm down-don't worry-type" and have also tried to pick their spirits up after their identification cards and visas got stolen-after they poked fun of me the whole time for being paranoid. Just cause you don't think anything will happen-doesn't mean they won't-and I'd rather avoid it by taking precautions and the helpful advice from friendly travellers like 2,3,4 and 5. Thanks Guys! | 5
It's too bad that some people use this forum to offend people rather then help. There are many different types of travellers out there-and it would be nice if we could all use this forum to be helpful and learn from one another. I admit I'm pretty new to this travel forum so maybe I'm a bit naive about that-but usually when I see a thread that I don't relate to or can't offer advice-I don't post a reply. But that's just me-boring old me. | 6
We always used to go to Hawaii for several months each year, after being robbed 6 years in a row we sold our apartment and just went to several South Pacific islands each year instead and have never had a problem in the SP with theft. | 7
