Silana Beach Village, Ovalau

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Has anyone stayed here recently? I can't find any up-to-date reviews & would like to know what the accommodation and food is like?

Hi, I lived on Ovalau Island for a few months as a volunteer teacher in a village near Silana, I stayed a night there for free with some friends from the village. It felt like no one had stayed there in months (I wondered whether anyone had ever stayed there!). The beach isn't great, but it's the best on Ovalau (Ovalau is 90% black sand/mangroves, Silana is the whiteish sand 10%). The accommodation is newly fitted, but like I said, it felt pretty much unused and is a bit open to insects etc. so if you're staying with a family it might not be the best. That aside, the village would be extremely welcoming as everyone in Fiji is and make your stay as happy as possible. The resort is built next door to the village but apart from the accommodation there isn't anything much else there. Silana is sweet, but it's definitely not the best of Fiji. But seeing how few tourists they get the village might make your stay extra special.

If you're looking for a beach, head to Caqali (pronounced THANG-a-LIE) or Leleuvia south of the island which is gooorgeous, but not a village stay (although you can go and visit the village on a Sunday for church). Bobo's Farm near Silana is meant to be very nice and run by by a Fijian / German couple. You can always these guys for the day on their organic farm
