Six days in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hello all,

Four of us (parents+kids ages 6 and 10) will be in Fiji mid-December for six nights after a month in New Zealand. We would like relax, swim, snorkel, hike, and kayak. We're considering staying on Viti Levu for the entire time, perhaps at Volivoli or the Coral Coast. Any suggestions on where to stay? Our impression is that it seems relatively costly to travel to a another island.

I suggest VoliVoli would be much better than the Coral Coast.
There is a nice (small) beach at VoliVoli, but the snorkelling is ordinary unless you go out on the boat. There is great fishing trips if you are into that.
Go by local bus. It takes about 3 hours from the airport, costs very little and will be a great part of the adventure.
You might also consider hopping out at Lautoka for a couple of hours on the way.
At Raki Raki, catch a cab to VoliVoli (F$15 each way), but do any shopping in Raki Raki first (fruit, drinks....) as there are no shops at VoliVoli.

Cheers,
Peter

You might also have a look at Nananu-i-ra Island - it's off the coast in the same area as Voli Voli and can be reached by a short boat ride from Ellington Wharf. There are a couple of budget minded places (Betham's and McDonald's) that accommodate families - they will also arrange boat tranportation. We opted for a taxi picking us up at Raffles across the street from the airport (we had arrived at 5am) and dropping us at the wharf - came back on the bus (a nice adventure as Peter says). We stopped at the supermarket in Lautoka to stock up on groceries. Nice beaches, good snorkeling, some easy hikes but don't know about the kayaks!

Good suggestion.
There is snorkelling off the beach at McDonalds and there is a nice walk across to the other side of the island, or around the coast.

Thanks for the replies. Think we'll look at Nananu-i-ra Island. Looking forward to our trip.
