surfing beaches

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

My husband and I are looking to find a nice beginner surf beach. We are planning to go somewhere possibly Fiji in July. We would like to stay away from super touristy places. Any thoughts for warm weather and beginner surf for us? Accomadations we would like them to be in the moderate range. We have about 8 days.

Thank you!

I don't surf myself, and will pass on what info I have just in case a real surfer doesn't show up..

As far as I know Fiji is not a good place for beginner surfing. Primarily high quality reef breaks accessed by boat and you have to be good.

On the main island of Viti Levu, around Sigatoka there is apparently a surfing beach which is OK for beginners, but the compromise is being close to some conventional package tourism.

The East coast of Australia, south of Rockhampton, has much better conditions for beginning surfers than most Pacific Islands, where surfers usually need to go out beyond reefs to find waves.

Try Club Masa, at Kulu Kulu near the mouth of the Sigatoka River. Great place to learn to surf. No coral reefs to get crunched on. Nice sandy beach break.
