Surfing Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hello All,

I did a search but the posts on surfing in Fiji were so dated thought I would hit you all up for some info.

My boyfriend and I are going to Fiji, he surfs but I do not. The surf resorts are fairly expensive and it looks like I would have to pay all the fees despite not surfing. Any way to get to Frigates Passage from the mainland--looking for a reliable captain?

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

There are some low budget surf camps. If you are looking at getting out to Malolo Reef (near Tavarua and Namotu) go to Rendezvous. You can get to Frigates from Waidroka Resort but the owners can be a bit annoying. Catch some for me.

Ok not a surfer here but I was involved in a conversation when staying on Kadavu regarding the famous Cloudbreak "exclusive" to Tavarua Island Resort. The owner of the resort I was staying at was saying that this exclusivity thing about surf breaks and even dive spots if totally illegal. There is no basis for it in Fiji law period. I realize you aren't exactly asking that question however I thought you might be interested in knowing that if you were shying away from surfing some of the hotter surf spots. I did hear that the heavies they were sending out have been reigned in. A rumour that the military government might step in to break up the money grab Tavarua Island Resort has on Cloudbreak was mentioned by a surfer involved in the said conversation. The owner of the resort I was at was also saying that as the previous governor general stated (with regard to diving) that if was like getting on a coach a going for a scenic drive. You have a guide/driver that shows you the cool things on the reefs etc and as long as you don't take anything you are basically a sight seer. Same goes for surfing.
