Bula My annual trip to Fiji is coming up in May - have only ever been to Coral Coast - Mamanuca islands and Yasawas - would like to try Taveuni island - need advice on a place to stay with a pool - close to any kind of township and beachfront with a great reef to snorkel - do we want tooooo much?? (will have our son with us who would like to do a dive course) The resorts i've looked at are $300us a night - is that the norm in taveuni? Any advice i'd be very greatful - Kim

Your criteria for a swimming pool is going to cost you on Taveuni as it's mostly the lux properties that have them. Go to a beachfront property instead and save a bundle. Try Coconut Grove Beachfront Cottages in Matei.

We stayed at Aroha----advertised as a B and B but on a beach in a village with a curry house for takeaway. The pool is lovely, the breakfast is v. generous and they arrange to have your dinner beautifully cooked and served for a very reasonable price if you would like it. There is a supermarket and you have a fridge and the rooms are lovely and very well appointed. The beach is not spectacular but is good for a bit of a walk, the reef is ok but we dived on the Rainbow reef which was great. The hosts at Aroha are very helpful, they have a driver to get you to and from the airport or to any place you want to go and help you find cheaper ways of doing things. It is midway down the west coast, right opposite the Rainbow Reef, very close to where the ferry from Suva comes in. We were very happy there and had some great trips. It was a couple of years ago but at that time certainly under $100 a day.

Hi Kim, Pacific Harbour on the Coral Coast has a couple of dive outfits offering dive courses. Check it out on the Web.
If you're interested in coming down this way, e-mail me at arcole@connect.com.fj (PM disabled) and I may be able to advise you on inexpensive but nice accommadation.

Hi,

I have stayed at Coconut Grove Beachfront Cottages as someone mentioned above. It costs around $250 for a night i think, including breakfast and free transfers and much more. It is pricey but absolutely worth it. It is absolutely beautiful, there are 3 cottages all beach front location with a private section of the beach. The staff could not be more helpful. They have kayaks and snorkle gear and will take you to the local reefs if needed. There is no pool however. You can walk through the local village to the shop and their driver will take you around the island at a very small additional cost. I would definately reccommend.
