Taveuni or Kadavu?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi there

I have the following question:
Taveuni or Kadavu? Or both?

I'm not a diver but I like to snorkel. And since the Yasawa Islands seems to be for teens and 20something backpackers I've thought Taveuni or Kadavu would be a good alternative?!

Thanks Katinka

Kadavu-because the best underwater seascapes near Taveuni are flushed by heavy currents-which is why they are such outstanding places to visit but only for experienced swimmers.

Hi, I suggest Taveuni to visit to snorkel and dive. The deep waters of Rainbow Reef need strong currents for the corals to show their beauty, but there is a great spot close to the shore that allows excellent snorkelling and great shore diving. Try Paradise Taveuni. It used to be called Susies Plantation and now has been upgraded with a new resort. But the diving and snorkelling have not changed one bit! They have a dive shop there so youcan hire snorkel gear and they accept day trippers. You don't have to stay at the resort to enjoy the beautiful waters. Try it and let me know what you think.

Taveuni! Definitely!
We stayed at Coconut Grove & what used to be Susies Plantation (as recommended above), snorkeling, hiking the Lavena Coastal Walk, Bouma National Park, kayaking alon the coast, Warrior Burial Caves, horseriding up old volcanoes.....

plus amazing friendly people, good food and good lcoal beer!

Ok, I admit it, first : I haven't been to both destination BUT I am going to Kadavu/Yasawas/Nananu I Ra in a few weeks, hence I have been reading and asking alot of questions about the dive places in the Fijis.
What appears to me is that :
- I first had the impression that Taveuni was the diving mecca but some reports coming from dive forums seem to show that Taveuni isn't really the place it used to be
- divers are unanimous that some of the best snorkeling and diving is achieved in Kadavu, because of the proximity of the Great Astrolabe reef. there's even a spot where you get significant opportunities of seeing manta rays while snorkeling.
- It looks like Nananu I Ra (north Viti Levu) and the Bligh waters are the up and coming place for diving, I wouldn't say for snorkeling though...

from the information I collected so far, Kadavu shouldn't be missed. If you still have some time left to go, I'll be back mid-march, leave me a message in my private box then. No Taveuni news though.
