taxi's in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

We're going to Fiji in Sept and staying at the Warwick. How do I get a taxi in Fiji if I want to go from the resort into the nearest town? Don't want to have the resort organise this as last time they charged us a fortune.

Most large hotels have taxis waiting.
"the resort organise this as last time they charged us a fortune. " - Im guessing that this was not a real taxi but hotel car. Metred taxis are not such ripoffs. Alternatively you could phone for your own and one will come.

The nearest town is Sigatoka and well worth travelling to . The market, the supermarket (to fill your bar fridge) and restaurants are all well worthwhile (and much cheaper than the hotel)

Im guessing that the cab fare will be about $10 each way

it's super easy to hail a cab in Fiji and they all have a meter so you won't get ripped off which is good to know.

2

Can you basically go to the front of the hotel and hail a cab, the same as here. I remember when we stayed at the Shangri-la there were none to be seen.

You could always flag down a passing bus, or a "shared" taxi. Both are pretty common, although a "shared" taxi might already be full. Much cheaper than the hotel cars.

Can you recommend any restaurants in Sigatoka?

All the times I have been in Fiji I have never once seen a meter in use in a taxi and I have grabbed taxis from the taxi stand in Sigatoka??? was I missing something here..... and I have never found a taxi driver who agreed to $10 one way from Sigatoka to the Warwick,, a shared taxi is $6.00.. I am dating a local and even when traveling with friends taxis are not that cheap to Korolevu..

I have a number for a guy name Harry (got the from the Beachhouse Resort) and he has a van and will take you anywhere you want to go, but if you want to go to Sigatoka,,, grab a bus,,, its a great way to meet locals and its super cheap,,, but the shared taxis are the same price and faster but not as safe as the bus's as the drivers tend to be crazy....

As far as restaurants go...... whats your expectations? There is a curry place at hte round about at the bridge in Sigatoka.... its great food and not too bad a place for a local restaurant... There is also a good restaurant at Tubakula bungalows next to the Outrigger.... We go there all the time as the food is great and its cheap,,, most expensive dish is a thai chicken curry for $15 fjd....They do a mean breakfast for $10 too.... not sure if prices have gone up recently as we didnt visit there last trip (March 09).... There are loads of good restaurants in Nadi closer towards the airport but unfortunately Sigatoka is abit limited.

Have you had a lovo experience??? Ridges resort have a lovo night on Thursday nights for $30 per person... but they use foil and the taste is very different from a genuine lovo when banana leaves are used... I have a friend who is the land owner of the local famous waterfall... I can organise him to do a lovo for you for $25 per head and its only a 10 min taxi ride from the Warwick to his village,,, he can also take you to the waterfall if you want,,, worth the walk...

Pm if you want details

Enjoy your holiday :-)
